can't open any .dat extention email attachments on my mac.

I'm not able to open any .dat extension attachments in my mac emails.
I know those are files associated with Microsoft Outlook.
Is there any way or any free software that can be downloaded to help me open those files?
Any help on the subject is greatly appreciated.
