Template for Visio 2010

I have started using Visio 2010 and looking for different templates with that helps managers in establishing budgets and achieving their goals. Any idea where will I get it.

Reply 1 : Template for Visio 2010

The best sequence is to start with a problem and find a solution. It's far less good to start with a tool and then find problems that more or less can be solved with it.

For managing budgets I recommend a bookkeeping program or (on a small scale) a spreadsheet. To achieve a goal you start working and organizing and lobbying, not making diagrams. That's a sure way of not reaching your goal.

Why it occupies so big more space?

Hello:

I have two laptop, an old Toshiba, another new HP. They are installed totally the same softwares. All installed wXP.

The old occupies 7-giga space, but the new HP laptop occupies 12-giga space? The 2nd occupies 5-giga more than the 1st one!!

It is hard to understand? Why it occupies so big more space? Can it be solved?
....

Reply 1 : Why it occupies so big more space?

The OS as configured by vendors, such as HP, Dell, and the rest all seem to be filled with a lot of what I call bloatware, tons of trial versions of software, crippleware and such in hopes you buy the full copy one day.

HP includes their photo sotftware, HP Care, and a ton of other products, my guess this is where the extra space is used from. Also, not sure how your Toshiba is configured but my HP has about 5-6GB in a partition so you can reload the OS from scratch and be like day one again, so that could also be where the space has gone.

Reply 2 : Why it occupies so big more space?

Both my PCs are done with clean installation, so there is nothing to do with the vendors advertisements.

The C: partitions of my PCs are only for OS. Actually even you did not change any thing, after working days or weeks, you often see the "occupied space" changes including smaller.

I always doubt there are virtual/nonsense codes/files occupying the space, these vertual/nonsense codes/files are not occuoied the space stably.

Reply 3 : Why it occupies so big more space?

On a larger hard drive, if that's the case on your new computer, the percentage alloted for System Restore Points may be larger.. As such, System Restore will take up more space on the second computer. For example, 10% or an 80 GB hard drive is a lot different than 10% or a 250 GB hard drive. To reduce the space used for SR points, RIGHT click on "My Computer", choose "Properties", then the "System Restore" tab, then simply move the slider to a smaller percentage.

Hope this helps.

Reply 4 : Why it occupies so big more space?

The PCs leave 12% for "System Restore" automatically. What is the meaning of "System Restore", how much space should at least leave for the "System Restore"?

Reply 5 : Why it occupies so big more space?

On an 80 GB hard drive, you might want 12%, while on a 250 GB hard drive, you might only want 4 - 6 %..

Your choice depending on how many restore points you want to keep.

Hope this helps.

Java will not install on win 7

When I open the Java that I downloaded and saved when I get to Java setup the following message pops up: The software has already been installed on your computer Would you like to reinstall it ? yes or no. If I select no the setup stops and if I say yes I get the following message from windows installer: This action is only valid for products that are currently installed. I am using win7 64bit

Reply 1 : Java will not install on win 7

Click on the link to Sun's Java below, then scroll down to the ''Java Platform Standard Edition JDK 6 Update 24 (JDK or JRE)'' section, then click on the "Download JRE" button. Follow the prompts, select the Windows platform and the "Language", if necessary, accept the license agreement, click the "Continue" button, then download the full ''Windows OFFLINE Installation'' file to your desktop,(about 15 MB), scan it with your antivirus (just to be sure it's clean). Once that's done, if you've already got a Sun Java version on the computer, open the Control Panel, double click on the ''Programs & Features'' section, then uninstall all previous versions of the J2SE Java listed there. Once that's done, then install Java JRE 6u24 from the downloaded installer.

Internet Explorer 9 Freezing

System Info:
New Dell Inspiron 5805 computer only 6 months old.
i5 CPU 3.20 GHz
8GB RAM; 64-Bit Operating System
Windows 7 Home Premium; Service Pack 1

Situation: Two days ago I installed internet explorer 9 on my computer. The installation went fine. There were no problems. The next day, while surfing the internet, internet explorer froze. I could not move the mouse, escape, or ctrl+alt+delete. The only way out of it was to unplug my computer (which I hate to do). Once the the computer restarted, I got on the internet again. After a little while my screen went black then after a few seconds came back with a little discoloration that went away after a few more seconds and my screen was normal again. There was a notice on the bottom of my screen that said my AMD Display Driver was not responding but has "successfully" recovered. Since then, the freezing or blacking out had occured five more times.
Questions:
1. What's happening with IE9 and my Display Driver?
2. What should I do? Do I need to change my display driver or IE9?
3. I have been a long-time IE user; if it is necessary for me to change browsers, what is your honest reccommendation?

Thank you so much! I appreciate you thoughts, opinions, and time.

Dell Inspiron 1420

I bought a Dell Inspiron 1420 on ebay, It came with windows 7. I called dell to ask how to update the driver, and they said the Inspiron 1420 was not made for windows 7 and there was no way to update the drivers. I thought I would ask here, and see if anyone could help me?

Reply 1 : Dell Inspiron 1420

Use Vista drivers. Or just run Windows Update. Windows 7 should provide almost all of the 1420 drivers by default anyway.

Reply 2 : Dell Inspiron 1420

Yup you can use the appropriate bit drivers from Vista as the driver model is near identical. Or if you go to Device Manager and search the internet for the updated driver.

Tool bar & log in screen

Everytime I open WLM I get the log in screen, how do you stop this from popping up, when WLM is open also have no access to the tools option, and no menu bar shown as well, after closing the log in screen WLM works fine and I can send & receive my emails fine. Can anyone help me get rid of the log in screen??

error message when opening ics/ids files

I have taken some 3D images with a confocal microscope. The data is saved as ics and ids files. It is the ids files I'm interested in as they are the pictures. When I opened the files yesterday there were no problems but when I tried again today there is an error opening ics files message even though they are ids. I am using Nikon EZ-C1 freeviewer to view the files as this is the software that the microscope uses. The text ics files relating to each of the pictures still open ok so I don't know if there is a way I can use them to create an image again or if there is something I can do to get the original picture files to open. Any help is appreciated as it is for my dissertation and I don't have an opportunity to take the pictures again.

M11xR1 - Browser GPU acceleration

These are my observations of FF 4.0 (Firefox 4.0) and IE 9.0 GPU Acceleration on an M11xR1 SU7300 and the driver versions required.

Using the Microsoft fish tank GPU acceleration as a test case.

All tests are done with 500 fish (Fish500) with the browser windows in full screen

I found that in FF 4.0 my GT 335M was blacklisted. After I removed the blacklist I had GPU acceleration.

Blacklisting/Blocked Graphics Drivers

To enable GPU acceleration in FF 4.0 and IE 9.0 you will need at least Intel GMA version 8.15.10.2202.

Nvidia GPU acceleration can be enabled in any Nvidia driver version 257.21 or newer.

IE 9.0 GPU acceleration can be enabled using Intel GMA version 2020 or newer

Make sure GPU acceleration is enabled in both FF 4.0 and IE 9.0 (Ticked in FF4.0 left blank in IE9.0)

Hopefully this should save a bit of head scratching for a few people.

Reply 1 : M11xR1 - Browser GPU acceleration

You could try: Force Enable GPU Hardware Acceleration Graphics Rendering on Old GPU in IE9 My Digital Life

for the Intel GPU with the old driver. (you'll have to lock the registry key or it will reset when you switch GPUs)

Is it possible to manually whitelist the Intel GPU in FF4?

In Chrome 10 (enable 'GPU Accelerated Canvas 2D' in about:flags):

Fish500

Disabled: 4fps

Enabled: 24fps (however, I think the fish got smaller LOL)

Also, I think a good test, if you can figure out how standardise it, would be to check how latency(or otherwise how snappy the browser feels) is affected for GPU(Intel and nVidia) vs CPU.

Reply 2 : M11xR1 - Browser GPU acceleration

I'm good to go with IE9.0 as I have the Intel GMA version 8.15.10.2020 which natively supports GPU acceleration in IE9.0

Pushing the boat out a bit further I forced direct2D rendering in Firefox 4.0

about:config

gfx.direct2d.force-enabled = true

This then allows GPU acceleration on the Intel GMA version 8.15.10.2020

Old PCI Network Card vs. Newer USB Dongle. Which is faster?

So as I understand from my reading it seems that PCI Network Cards are always the way to go usually over USB. However in my case I just picked up a kind of older model one than my USB dongle is and I just am wondering am I sacrificing speed by giving up the dongle for the card.

Here are the specs:

My USB dongle is a N 150 Belkin Basic Wireless USB adapter, 802.11n

and

My Network PCI card is a RT2400 Wireless LAN Card, manufactured by Ralink Technology Corp. I believe I read it was 802.11b

The wireless router we use is a linksys (basic blue one) and we are on cable internet.(wired. not dsl)

My confusion lies here. When I use my USB Dongle for wireless it says under my wireless connection popup that I am receiving 54 MBPS and the connection says excellent.

When I am using the PCI Network Card on the other hand it shows that I am receiving 11 MBPS, and it also shows excellent.

Both seem to work fine however I haven't really put them to the test with downloading any heavy files or anything.

I am kind of leaning towards the PCI card. Any input? Is this the faster route even though it says 11 mbps and the dongle says 54 mbps? or should I be sticking with the dongle for a faster connection?

Reply 1 : Old PCI Network Card vs. Newer USB Dongle. Which is faster?

however, PCI connection is faster than USB, but that's not your question though. I suggest you buy a better card or stick with the usb dongle. So which actually seems faster to you?

Because downloading yourself is much more Pro style.

There's always a slight chance that updates will actually be detrimental to stability for your particular machine and manual DLs give you an extra measure of control.

PC vs Mac for graphic design

im not trying to start a big debate here, just want to share my story.

i went to college for graphic design, we used macs. i thought there was no other. we had visitors in the school, they asked me, why dont u use PC's? i just laughed and said because they're junk. looking back i had no facts to back up that claim, i just "knew it" like a priest knows there's a god i guess.

anyway its many years later and i long ago switched to PC.

ive noticed huge myths in the PC vs mac debate.

1) it's like there's only 2 types of computers, mac and those piece of junk PC's they sell at futureshop etc. It's simply not true. There are Business class PC's!

2) mac are for art, pc are for business. ridiculous really. its all about the programs- adobe is for artists with PC or mac. exel, powerpoint is for business.

3) windows sucks. Well not for me. i have had win 98, XP pro and now Win7 Pro 64bit and no major problems at all. and i dont run any anti virus. as far as OS visuals, i just wanna get in the programs, 3D looping icons don't impress me. i still have my windows desktop setup just like the classic old macs.

Now for a good price comparison, i just got a HP 8740W on ebay. it's brand new open box deal with factory warranty.

-made of aluminum just like macs with nice brushed aluminum finish.

-gorgeous brite 17" screen. not HD low profile, more room for graphics toolbars.

-wsxga resolution. 1680x1050. it's my favourite resolution. not too small online or for writing action script code but lots of room in space hog programs like flash.

-core i5 turbo processors.

-ATI firepro 8720 graphics card!! that's a much more powerful card than even macs best 17" macbook pro has, and its optimized for photoshop and illustrator etc. As a bonus, it also plays any game on the planet on high res. too!

-trackpoint eraserhead style mouse. i love these things. i can do complicated photoshop lasso selections, illustrator bezier curve drawing, web or games. wayyy more accurate than touchpad, with 3 useful buttons. (it has the touchpad too)

-military tested and passed for drop, water and sand.

-can be upgraded to i7 quad core, 32GB ram, quadro 5000m card and dreamcolor screen, (the undisputed best laptop screen in the world for photographers etc.)

And the best part about this laptop, it was less than a grand!! i looked to see what mac i could get for this price..what a joke, thats what made me want to write this.

The dell m6400/m6500 and thinkpad w700/w701 are beautiful graphics powerhouses too, although they're bulky and heavy, my HP is quite a bit smaller. The thinkpad DS comes with dual screens and a built in Waycom tablet!! now that is built for an artist. And it's still less than the macbook pro?? theres tons of cheaper and smaller business class units as well and i could go on for days, but one quicky- i got my daughter a mint dell d630 for only $300. it's also aluminum chasis, small, gorgeous and bombproof. She loves it.

Anyway, my rant is over. The reason i wrote this is simple, i just wanted to let other graphic artists know there are alternatives to overpriced macsbecause most artists i know dont have pocketfulls of spare cash to waste just to be the most stylish at starbucks...

Reply 1 : PC vs Mac for graphic design

We are all better off with more people like yourself.

Not for the reason you think, either.

I happen to think our community (Apple Users) has exceeded capacity.

Reply 2 : PC vs Mac for graphic design

Well I'm glad you were informed about what you were purchasing. Thats one of the most important things as a smart consumer. I'm tired of people purchasing laptops or anything for that matter just to say ooooh look at me I have a ________ whatever. I say get what fills your needs IMO. Sticking with Macbook Pro moving on lol...

Reply 3 : PC vs Mac for graphic design

wow... I never heard of this "PC" thing!!! thanks!

Reply 4 : PC vs Mac for graphic design

@op *yawn*

8740w = 1 hour battery life.

$4k+cost w/listed options.

@graphic designers. op's cake is a lie.

Reply 5 : PC vs Mac for graphic design

*shrugs* Some design firms use macs, others use PCs. Doesn't really matter one way or another. Photoshop is Photoshop, Illustrator is Illustrator, InDesign is Indesign.

You are right on point though when you mention universities perpetuating the myth that macs are great and windows is junk. It's a mantra they pound into the heads of the student body year after year. The students swallow it hook line and sinker without even giving it a second thought just like you did at one point.

Your resentment seems to be towards apple, when in reality it should be towards your professors and yourself.

If you really want to help aspiring graphic artists, encourage them to make up their own mind. Let them know that either computer will work fine for their needs. Let them know they should use and be able to use both platforms if they want to make themselves more marketable in a saturated industry. Try to remain unbiased and encourage artistic excellence above all else, always.

Reply 6 : PC vs Mac for graphic design

Windows is not super unreliable.

Linux is not user friendly.

Mac Os is reliable and user friendly.

Now you can decide for yourself what is better for work.

They're just tools. Some people prefer one sort, some prefer a different sort. I use Macs for some things, Windows PCs for other things, Linux for some other things. Hell, I even have DOS 6 & NT4 boxes kicking around fulfilling random little jobs!

Fifteen, twenty years ago they were much better than the vast majority of Windows PCs, both better constructed and engineered and (crucially) Mac OS was much better for running Photoshop, Pro Tools & such than Windows was. This is probably where the reputation 'better for creative stuff' comes from. It's no longer true really (they both do more or less the same thing, with the exception of certain OSX-only software etc), but that doesn't mean there are never any valid reasons to buy one.

Also (slight tangent): I HATE this 'Mac vs PC' phrasing. A Mac is a PC. It's a different sort of PC to a Windows PC, but they are both subsets of 'personal computer'. That ad campaign massively annoyed me.

Crossfire 6970 or sli 485

If money is not a problem, which GPUS would you pick? Crossfire 6970 or sli 485

If we do get these mobile GPUS 580/585 and/or 6990(dual GPU) which one is better? Again sli 580/585 or 6990(dual GPU)

I might get the M18x this spring or summer.

Reply 1 : Crossfire 6970 or sli 485

probably 6970 from the looks of it.. Crossfire scales better than SLI so even though single 485M have a small lead in scalling 6970 will be more efficient.

Reply 2 : Crossfire 6970 or sli 485

485m SLI if you don't care about the price/performance ratio.

Reply 3 : Crossfire 6970 or sli 485

6970M Xfire definitely! Cheaper and slightly better from the benches I saw.

Reply 4 : Crossfire 6970 or sli 485

features packed with, 485m SLI definitely.

Reply 5 : Crossfire 6970 or sli 485

Um... I am still unsure.....might get sli this time.

Reply 6 : Crossfire 6970 or sli 485

HD6000 series scale much better, with near 95% scalability dependin on resolution, compared to something like 75% for sli.

So HD6970 CF should give better performance, and run cheaper.

485m is still a good option, it will just be much more expensive, and will most probably be a bit slower.

On the 6990 and 580/85, I honestly have no idea, and until we get some samples, it will be difficult to say. Judging from the desktop 6990 and 580/85, the 6990 would be better.

Why is it that people seem to think that the 6990 should be compared to the GTX 580/585?... considering the 6990 is a dual GPU card and the GTX 580 isn't, yet they perform comparatively the same in a large number of cases, that's extremely disappointing performance yet again from AMD's line-up.

This is just like the whole GTX 285 vs 4870 X2 crap again.

If I had the choice and money was no limiting factor, I'd definitely pick NVIDIA. Buying an AMD card is like buying a Lamborghini without an engine.

It's all about the price. It doesn't matter if it is a dual GPU or not. Also, the HD6990 performs between 50 to 100% faster depending on the game, than the GTX580.

And they compare to it because it is the current highest end from Nvidia until they release their own dual GPU.

Right now the current HD6000 lineup are phenomenal cards, with amazing crossfire scalability and price, performance and energy efficiency. Well... I can't say that for the HD6990, because it threw everything away for performance. Just like the 400 Nvidia series.

Click the orb-control panel-Programs and features-upper left corner under tasks- Click view installed updates, it takes a little time to populate.
Under Microsoft Windows it should show what IE version you have.
As for your other problem, I haven't a clue.
When I loaded IE9, I went to Microsoft.com. The IE9 download pops up. Once you hit download , it asks for version either 32 or 64 bit. I clicked my version and it loaded with no trouble.

Hope that helps.

Reply 2 : Can't download IE9

To determine which version of Internet Explorer you have, open IE, then click on "Help" in the upper left, choose "About Internet Explorer". It will tell you your version number.

As to installing IE9, clicking on the link below should take you to the Vista 32bit download page for the full, offline installer for IE9. (If you're using the 64 bit version of Vista, the download link is at the bottom of the page.) Download the file to your desktop.

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?FamilyID=a47f45cd-8160-4d0d-b6cf-a90996be7197&displaylang=en

Many of the downloads are the bootstrap installer which require you to be online during the installation. Any glitches online can cause issues.. The full, offline installer above doesn't require such.

And before installing IE9 from the file above, be sure to clean out all Temp files and Temporary Internet Files.. If you haven't scanned the computer for malware, please download the free removal tool from the link below, install it, update it, then run a full system scan and delete anything it finds.

Malwarebytes Antimalware

When that's done, RIGHT click on the IE9 installation file, choose "Run as administrator", then run it.

Hope this helps.

Intel Rapid Storage Technology on GX740

Ok so my laptop only comes with 1 500 GB HDD.

I noticed that it comes with Intel Rapid Storage Technology (also avail on msi drivers page for GX740)

There is a tiny icon in the system tray/ notification bar on the right.

I don't know much about RAID setups but I think I need at least 2 HDDs to take advantage of it. So is this installed in my computer for no reason or is there a slightest chance that this can increase my performance or something?

Reply 1 : Intel Rapid Storage Technology on GX740

I have the same question, does it increase performance? what does it do? Mine does nothing..... close it, nothing happens, open it, nothing............

Reply 2 : Intel Rapid Storage Technology on GX740

There seems to be a slight performance boost (I tested with CrystalDiskMark) if you have an SSD, but I don't know if you would notice it with a conventional hard drive.

Web design suggesstions

I'm interested in having a basic ecomerce web site created and am looking into having it done by Go Daddy, Register, Google (or a similar website which provides these services). Do any of you know which one of these types of companys has the best/worst service or have any other opinions about going this route? I am new to this and want to make sure I'm not making a mistake. Thank you.

Reply 1 : Web design suggesstions

Go with GoDaddy.com, that's where I got my SSL Certificate and Website Protection scanner. They offer a full suite of everything to do with web site development. You can do everything from domain registration to web hosting to setting up an ecommerce backend in one location, which is better than trying to integrate different services from different companies.

Low Fps During Gaming

Dear Alienware M15x users,

I have a 9 month old M15x, initially it worked brilliantly on games such as battlefield bad company 2, call of duty modern warfare 2. However lately I tried playing call of duty black ops and its become unplayable with fps lower than 20.

I tried fiddling with the graphics setting and still its impossible to play multiplayer or campaign smoothly even at the lowest settings. I've seen people being able to play at 1920x1080 with 50 fps average. My question is could there be something wrong with my GPU or laptop as a whole?

My specs are;

i7-820QM

8GB 1333MHz RAM

Nvidia GTX260M 1GB VRAM (driver version 266.58)

screen resolution 1920x1080.

Reply 1 : Low Fps During Gaming

Black ops had problem with system resources, but they released a patch that fixes it. have u tried that? my vaio(most of brands use same hardware so, not only alienware users) ran poorly on unpatched black ops, but after it ran very well.

Try running different games, like Civilization V, it requires a lot of system resources, and if it runs well, then it's not ur hardware.

Also try updating drivers

system requirements are obviously not the issue, so

GOOD LUCK!

Reply 2 : Low Fps During Gaming

ok thanks i will try that

Reply 3 : Low Fps During Gaming

Ok, first of all make sure you didn't enable stealth mode accidentaly (or whether it didn't activate itself as it does from time to time)

Then go to the config files, both multi player and single player and search for the following entries:

seta r_multiGpu "0"

seta r_multithreaded_device "1"

They must be set like this.... but on a lot of systems they are the exact opposite which is wrong for your machine. If you have multiGPU "1" change it to "0" and when you have the multithreaded setting on "0" set it to "1".

This tweak massively improved the performance for me.

Jarte

Am on Windows 7 for PC. On January 15 I downloaded 'Jarte' from this site. It's a free word-processor that rivals Open Office. I opened it today and worked on a file for 5 hours, researching and writing a 1200-word report. My computer then crashed for the first time ever. I power back up, no sign of my Jarte file. I then look at Jarte settings and see that default autosave setting is switched to 'Off' when you download it. This means i never saved my file, and I never even gave it a name. It's my fault for not saving, I'd just point out that these days we're accustomed to leaving everything to autosave, so I'm surprising this has happened.

My question is, are there any solutions within Jarte or Windows 7 to get my work back? Surely the unsaved text I wrote is on some temporary file somewhere, or deep in my hard drive?

If not, I am in deep trouble.

Reply 1 : Jarte

I should add that Jarte files are saved as .rtf format.

Reply 2 : Jarte

Probably you lost it. Luckily, your trouble is only 5 hours deep, at most.

Kees

Reply 3 : Jarte

I heard someone say cops can now retrace keystrokes on bad guys' computers. If they can do that in the law enforcement world, surely we can get back some text in the real world ?!

(I'm still in the denial-about-how-bad-i-messed-up phase, I guess)

Reply 4 : Jarte

Nope... For all intents and purposes, the data is gone. There is some research showing that RAM isn't quite as transitory as we're all taught, but odds are you overwrote the data stored in RAM many times over just by booting the computer again, so even if you were in a fully equipped lab, it'd probably be faster to just start over from scratch.

And first off there are a lot of fantastical claims about what law enforcement agencies can and can't do. Most of the stuff you see on shows like CSI, is either made up for good TV, or they're using something that is in the early prototype stages in reality, not even close to ready for any kind of real world use. Furthermore, law enforcement agencies usually have a lot of time and monetary resources the average person does not. You never hear about how reconstructing the activities of some crook took them 3 years and $2 million, and the ne'er do well was out doing bad things that whole time, because that doesn't fit the sensational story of catching the bad guy in the end.

Long story short, if you didn't save it, it's gone, the end. And if it's likely going to take you more than 5 hours to reconstruct this, then what exactly is it you're saving?

Just think of what you lost as a first draft. You've run through it in your head once, started crystallizing your thesis and supporting arguments, so the next run through should let you avoid some of the areas that maybe didn't work very well, etc.

Finally, the format you're saving in really doesn't make a bit of difference if the file was never saved in the first place.

Acer 8930G upgrade

Hi there, I am sorry if this has been posted before, but I wanted to know what is the maximum potential of my Acer 8930G in terms of RAM, graphics card, processor and cooling system.

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

Current specs:

Intel core 2 Duo P8400 2.26 1066MHz

GeForce 9600GT

4GB DDR3

320GB HDD

Reply 1 : Acer 8930G upgrade

check out the 8930 owners thread for more info

some motherboards will run a quad core cpu

max ram 6gb(8gb mine will not boot)

cooling i don't think you can upgrade that other than

better thermal paste and maybe a copper shim on the gpu

Reply 2 : Acer 8930G upgrade

There are issues with 6GB of RAM however, it isn't seamless.

Reply 3 : Acer 8930G upgrade

Given the issues with 6GB of RAM, would you say it is a good upgrade altogether?

Is IE9 really ready to be used

Please note, I'm not sure if my original messages posted? the usual response to confirm didn't show? I was hoping to be encouraged on word of the new IE9. I see that its a problem with online bank usage? I subscribe to Kim Kamando and it sounded good to me other than the negative I found here on the bank issue. Kamando speaks highly of the new version and suggests installing without regrets. Can anyone confirm a postive "go" on that? Thanks This is a great site for searching for help/information unselfishly contributed by the moderators we have here. imgrateful1

Internet explorer stops working pop up in a loop.

Win 7 pro/ IE 8
I keep getting this pop up about win explorer has stopped working and [it has not stopped working,] but the pop up takes control of the window and you have to close to try and restore the home page and when you do here comes the same pop up again followed by another one that says it is going to return you to your home page. I did the lava soft scan as well as SFC scan along with the Avast scan which all 3 found nothing as well as the MS site and instructions were of no help to correct the problem.

Reply 1 : Internet explorer stops working pop up in a loop.

1. Run Internet Explorer without add-ons (it's a choice if you type internet in the search window on the desktop). Does that work correctly.
2. If it does, in IE go to Tools>Manage add-ons to discover which of your add-ons is causing the issue.
3. Please tell the results here.

Have disabled all add ons. and prob still exists.

Try it in a new Windows account. First without add-ons. Then with. What happens?

Suggested APPs: AdAware, SpyBot, Spyware Blaster, MalwareBytes, and AVG coupled with Threatfire

Try Firefox as well for testing to see if you get the same problem. If not, then its just with IE. If yes, then its nested in the OS.

To break the looped onslaught of ads: http://www.hatebolt.com/Vey/?p=131

Honest honest most honest course of action to take would be to restore your OS *IF* you have a
prebuilt desktop or laptop with simple factory image restore. Everytime I've thought something of that nature is gone, something wacky reappears or random functionality is impacted. Move your data somewhere safe such as a flashdrive using a Linux liveCD (older Ubuntu 9.10 is what I use - http://releases.ubuntu.com/9.10/) taking care to only move essential files such as docs, pics, music, and videos since the deliverer of your irritation might be amongst them. *IF* you installed the OS manually, this is my no means easier with loading drivers and such, but I still would suggest going that route with the voracity of the affliction you have described. The time you spend treating the disease can span days with no success; I've learned to just move on once AdAware, SpyBot, Spyware Blaster, MalwareBytes, AVG, and Threatfire have failed.

Want to install internal media card reader

My new project is an old Micron Mellennia with an upgraded MoBo and processor. The board is an Intel D850MV, which unfortunately does not support USB2. I did install an old USB2 PCI card to get USB2, but would like also like to install a universal media card reader in one of the front 4" bays. The local shop only had ones that plugged into the MoBo's front panel connector, which is only USB1. I couldn't find any, but do they make internal readers that will plug into my USB2 PCI card's standard internal USB2 connector? Do they make USB2 PCI cards with the internal motherboard header type connector? I found a USB2 male to USB A male adapter cable http://www.amazon.com/Adapter-designed-motherboard-external-connector/dp/B000V6WD8A/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1300542382&sr=1-5. Will this work?

What is this big piece of metal doing on my gtx 470m?

Whats the deal here? its about 3mm off the board.

Any way to get it off? or what laptop this was even made for?

Its so big that I think I'd have to bend my heatpipe and then I'm not sure the screws would reach to the right places.

Spoiler :

I haven't really tried to just stick it in there yet. I really don't think it would be a good idea without any modifications.

Do you think it would be an extremely bad idea to try and file it down?

Last question that needs to be asked, out of the sheer small possibility; could this be a quadro 3000m or 4000m?

Its a gf104-400-a2.

At first, I would assume it was a quadro card based on where I got it from and how much they know. Then the SLI connector made me think it couldn't be a quadro, but lo and behold, the newest quadro cards are pictured with an SLI connector.

Also in the past with the g9* cores, all the quadro cards had a 900 number, 770m, 3600m & 2700m were 975 and 3700m was 985, so I don't know what 400 could mean (actually I've never seen a model number so low). perhaps things have changed. what do you think?

Reply 1 : What is this big piece of metal doing on my gtx 470m?

Only option I see is tinfoil the full board except the heat-spreader and try to heatgun melt it off.

Most likely is is glued on by thermal epoxy.

Or if it's done like at the cpu-s then gl .. only hard force can remove it .. and that is more then dangerous.

Reply 2 : What is this big piece of metal doing on my gtx 470m?

Really? That is the GPU... Why would you want to tamper and remove the heatspreader on your GPU? And a GTX 470M is a GF104 part.

I suppose if you didn't care about your warranty then go for it, have fun taking the risk of destroying your GPU and with no warranty afterwards.

Because he can't re mount the heat pipe system.

Took a few cpu apart .. and the metal heatspreders is 1 waste of material ...

Only good they do is to protect the silicone .. but they keep the heat on it more then taking it away.

Without it the cpu stays a lot cooler.

Are we talking plastic surgery or microelectronics?

My guess is that it was put there for a reason. But then again, what does NVIDIA know, they only designed and fabricated it.

I would go for the 5850 for 300$ with a free copy of MW2.

Reply 8 : What is this big piece of metal doing on my gtx 470m?

Five finger discount...

Reply 9 : What is this big piece of metal doing on my gtx 470m?

haha^ I guess so...

superdooper49: And you would be paying more money for an older, worse performing card. I dont think I need mention the value of MW2.

sama98b: Actually I could remount the heatpipe. I just don't feel like it. If I did that I would probably go ahead and get a new copper sink and 2 bigger pipes. But is heatgunning it really the only option you see?

Any comments on filing the heat spreader?

mushishi: I know its gf104. And I know its the GPU. I bet you didn't know the quadro 3000m and 4000m are also both gf104 and the the 4000m is 100w with a 256-bit memory bus. Aaaand what warranty are you talking about?? who bought an OEM laptop??

H. A. L. & ichime: Yep, yes it sure does. Nvidia likely had no idea what they were doing, especially considering the 100% chance of this being an ES card.

I don't know how I'm going to mod my heatsink or the card yet. I do think it is a 4000m however. So I'm going to hold off on anything ambitious for now until I write up why I think its a 4000m

lsass.exe system error

my wife has dell inspiron 300m, no optic disk.
we haven't used the computer for a long time and just start using it 2 days ago.
on the second day, the computer start showing the "lsass.exe system error". can't get into the safe mode too. the antivirus in that computer has been outdated for 3 years.

any suggestion how to fix this problem?
thanks

Reply 1 : lsass.exe system error

Plug in your USB DVDRW drive and boot from that any of the free Antivirus CDs from http://antivirus.about.com/od/freeantivirussoftware/tp/avrescuecd.htm

Plug in your USB DVDRW drive and boot up that free Ubuntu CD (no install and few need a tutorial on its use) to gain access to files you need to copy out on the network or USB memory stick.

Now either you would have found a virus or can reinstall from scratch.

--> One thing I have to ask. Since there are free antivirus out for the past 3 years, why would anyone go without?

Logitech Bluetooth Mouse + m11x = not friendly!

I have a Dell Studio 15 which works absolutely perfectly with my Logitech bluetooth mouse (I had to get one of those cheapo bluetooth adapters for that laptop). But with my m11x, when I try to play games, or even surf the web, it seems as if the motion of the cursor is not fluid. In the Crysis demo, it made aiming difficult. In DotA it made controlling my character difficult. It's almost choppy at times, with clicks registering in often late. Why is it like this on this unit and how can I fix it when I already have the most updated drivers? TIA!

Good place to purchase refurbished Apple Products?

Where is a good online store (besides Apple.com) to purchase refurbished Apple Products like the Macbook Pro, Imac or the Mac Pro?

The local reseller puts the price way to high and in some cases Apple is out of stock of some of the refurbs that I am looking at (such as the 15" i5's selling for $1400).

I'm looking for reputable stores with online operating and worldwide shipping for this.

Thanks for any assistance.

Reply 1 : Good place to purchase refurbished Apple Products?

I would stick to buying refurbs from Apple unless that site is going to give you a warranty. They may take in a computer and "refurbish" it but its going to have what little warranty is left from the original, so usually none, or a very little warranty from the refurbisher.

Reply 2 : Good place to purchase refurbished Apple Products?

Agreed... I would buy from apple direct, they do a great job of refurbishing their products, and sometimes I feel like the have basically taken new products and called them "refurb" in order to sell off old stock. (i.e. iPad refurbs)

Reply 3 : Good place to purchase refurbished Apple Products?

FYI I have bought MANY refurb products from Apple and have never had a bad experience, I feel like they do a great job of making sure the products are like new.

Reply 4 : Good place to purchase refurbished Apple Products?

Fortunately or unfortunately (whichever way you want to put it), the Apple online store is the BEST place to buy refurb Macs. Good luck.

Reply 5 : Good place to purchase refurbished Apple Products?

I'd also recommend the Apple Online Store as the best place to purchase refurbished Apple products. Refurbished products from Apple come with a full warranty and usually look and function exactly like a new product.

I've picked up a few refurbished iPods from the store before and never once had a problem with any of them, it's a great way to save a bit of money.

So I had a grey screen of death once or twice over the last few weeks, followed by the screen flickering and displaying a gradient of pulsating, thick grey bars earlier today, with the bottom half of the screen blacked out and unable to click on anything.

Any ideas what's wrong? Laptop is relatively new and I take decent care of it. Have been travelling a lot recently though and have very, very little HDD space left. Pretty sure that can't be the cause though, right?

Reply 1 : Recent issues

Ive only heard of these problems on the ATI Radeon HD 5xxx series. and the fix was to make adjustments to the idle clocks.

Reply 2 : Recent issues

Try a newer / different driver. Check first on the website of your notebook manufacturerer. Also try the latest from nvidias homepage if it doesn't work with the other one.

HDD shouldn't cause this issue. I once had a similar problem, screen going black or pink (eek ^^) and it was a driver issue.

Reply 3 : Recent issues

Also now have a window's warning saying that I should consider replacing the battery - without being plugged in, it runs out of juice distressingly quickly and will occasionally just shut off instantly without any power down screens or warning messages.

Yesterday, it refused to start up and all I saw was a flashing underscore in the top left corner...

Win 7 and XP File Sharing Problem

I persoannly have had no problems with any of the Win7 machines or XP, except one person had a Belkin router , that worked fine except all LAN sharing was blocked. I could ping but the units could not even see each other on the network.

Try no router, PC to PC with a crossover cable if possible or try a different router.

The lan I was working on had a network printer (hard cable cat5e) as well as 2 Win7 PCs and One XP laptop. No PCs could see each other , but all could get to the Printer on the network.

So the router was interfering with sharing but not to the printer.

It was a Belkin N1 Model. I replaced it with a Netgear Wireless G 37.95 from Walmart and all the problems disappeared.

I am still trying everything and if i have any headway i will let you know. one thing did work on one of my xp laptops. i set up a user on win 7 and i logged in as thet user on my laptop and had full access. but this did not work on anyother pc(i have 5) and it does not work all the time.

You mentioned you had already set up your network, can you give more information about how you went about setting that up?

I have a wireless router. i have 4 xp pcs and 1 windows 7 pc. everything is shared on all pcs. i have a user on the win 7 pc just for sharing it requiers a passwrd. the ysers n the xp pcs are all the same(it is the user on the win 7 that is specific for sharing).
when i try to go from xp pc to win 7pc for printer, dvd drive,cd drive, everything works fine. when i try to access the c drive i get access denied dut to "you may not have permissions" i have permissions setr up on the win 7 pc to allow everyone, the shared user and administrators. ( the user on the xp pcs are all administrators).
Have i missed anything?

ok you right click on your c drive and go right into security(not sharing). you must add a "guest" account and give them all access.
it goes throughsome file stuff which takes a while but it works.

Do this for your "Public" folder. Great job. That was the fix! You win.

I have 2 windows 7 machines with shared folders and (on one machine) a printer. These are all happily visible between the 2 windows 7 machines. Both Windows 7 machines can see my XP machines. My XP machines can see the Windows 7 machines but not access any of the shared folders or the print on the Windows 7 machines. I have been progressively removing all degrees of protection, security and safety but still the visibility is asymmetric: Windows 7 machines can access anything shared on an XP machine, but the XP machine cannot see any of the shared folders or the print on the Windows server machine.

Tara, I know how he solved this problem and if you email me at jimmy@wedomotherboards.com I'll give you the answer and I'll explain to you why I don't answer the questions people post on this forum.

I know most of the answers to questions and those I don't know I can figure out.

Can someone help? I can read shared files from 7 to XP, but can't access the shared files from XP to 7 - get "access denied....." box. I have tried everything from every post and nothing seems to help. I see the XP machine, but can't access it. I also need share the printer connected to the XP machine. I have shared the printer, but can't see it.

Thanks for the quick reply, but on my XP machine, when I right click on my C drive, I only have "sharing & security" not just 'sharing'......

i thought you had the other problem. seeing win 7 c drive from an xp pc. usualy you have no problem seeing xp from win 7 pc. sorry.

Jimmy,

I don't take part in any naming conversations so I couldn't tell you! But they do have distinct capabilities as posted earlier.

Yes, both computers have the same workgroup name. One post said to not use homegroup. I can "see" the XP machine from Win 7 machine - just can't access it.

Thanks EVERYONE for ANY/ALL suggestions.

Have you tried to Share any files from your Windows 7 computer? Follow the instructions here: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Share-files-with-someone.

Tara - I can see my "7 files" from the XP machine - can't see the "XP files" from the 7 machine - get 'access denied' error message. Thanks!

Reply 28 : Win 7 and XP File Sharing Problem

had the same sharing problems and frustrations...solved it by setting up users on both PCs with the same name and same password...know it sounds dumb, but it worked for me...thrn, if the active user on each machine is the same, you can see each computer's shares from the other...if different users are the active user on each, both Win7 and/or xp will prompt for a signon...if you sign on with the common name/pwd, the shares become visible...

2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee issues

Hello, I've been having intermittent issues with my 2000 GC. It surges and shifts when driving at a constant rate down the free way and in town. I had suspected it could be transmission related but some of the posts here make me think that it might actually be related to the ECM. I did pull engine codes from the odometer as well and they seem to be leaning in that direction as well.

The codes from the odometer are as follows:
P 0121 TPS signal does not correlate to MAP sensor signal.
APPS voltage input below the minimum acceptable voltage.

P 0201 An open or shorted condition detected in control circuit for Injector # 1 or the INJ 1 injector bank.

P 0202 An open or shorted condition detected in control circuit for Injector # 2 or the INJ 2 injector bank.

P 0203 An open or shorted condition detected in control circuit for Injector # 3 or the INJ 3 injector bank.

P 0204 Injector # 4 or INJ 4 injector bank output driver stage does not respond properly to the control signal.

P 0206 Injector # 6 output driver stage does not respond properly to the control signal.

P 0207 Injector # 7 output driver stage does not respond properly to the control signal.

P 0208 Injector # 8 output driver stage does not respond properly to the control signal.

P 1594 Battery voltage sense input above target charging voltage during engine operation.

Anyone have any advice on where to look from here based on the engine codes I'm getting?

Reply 1 : 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee issues

Forgot to mention, the problem does seem to be worse in wet weather or on hot days when the AC has been running for a long time. Both of which also make me think it could be electrical rather than the trans.

Reply 2 : 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee issues

Having exact same issues, EXACT, have you had any updates to this problem. I have read many posts that seem to think the tps is the main culprit, looking forward to hearing an update, the dealership said they could not get it to repeat issue codes had cleared before I took it to them. It seems to always do the surging thing on the highway along with a slight increase/decrease in rpm's but does not always throw the code. SO FRUSTRATING.

No updates thus far. I'm guessing this forum doesn't see a ton of traffic like some of the others I've been to. sad

Make sure you use IE9 32bit and NOT 64bit

Hi all,

As topic says. The reason for this, ALSO for windows 7 64bit users!

Is that a lot of the reasons and features that makes IE9 as fast as firefox, safari, chrome or at least close to is due to things that still HAVE NO 64BIT versions! which means IE9 64bit is using old files.

IE9 vs Chrome 10 vs Firefox 4 RC vs Opera 11.01 vs Safari 5 - The BIG browser benchmark! | ZDNet

Flick through this and you will see what that means.

Cheers.

Reply 1 : Make sure you use IE9 32bit and NOT 64bit

Specifically, the 64-bit version of IE9 doesn't have the just-in-time Javascript compiler that improves performance on script-heavy sites (like benchmarks). See here for more info:

Q&A: 64-Bit Internet Explorer - EricLaw's IEInternals - Site Home - MSDN Blogs

Edit: still, I wouldn't go so far as to say "do NOT use 64-bit IE9". It's still a fast browser, and if the performance is adequate (eg. you don't visit script-heavy sites), then why not use it? I'd suggest people try both and make up their mind themselves.

Reply 2 : Make sure you use IE9 32bit and NOT 64bit

IE9 64bit is NOT a fast browser.. no matter how much love you want to give it... it's crap! that's just the reality. the 32bit is just fine. But compared to everything else out there.. the 64bit is just not good enough to even borther.

Reply 3 : Make sure you use IE9 32bit and NOT 64bit

Wow, I just ran the benchmarks found here:

Browser Benchmark Center

64 bit is surprisingly low performer.

Reply 4 : Make sure you use IE9 32bit and NOT 64bit

Chrome is kicking every other benchmark in the butt.

Im surprised that peoples still advice FireFox. Its slow, its a resource hog, it feels "laggy" and too much mechanical.

and im talking as an ex firefox user. I used to use FF since its very first version, but i was pissed in the time about how slow and crawling it began to act.

Then i switched to Chrome. Turns out that all my plugins are in chrome as well, as more and more developers are turning to it, and its fast, stable, reliable, its features are awesome once you get used to it.

and for sure, ILL NEVER GO BACK!

Ie9 still interesting tho, but i see that its really similar to chrome than firefox.

Reply 5 : Make sure you use IE9 32bit and NOT 64bit

Well duh... There is not, and never has been, any reason to use a 64-bit browser. Why would anybody even consider it? Most plugins are only available in 32bit anyway.

Reply 6 : Make sure you use IE9 32bit and NOT 64bit

I downloaded the 32-bit version of IE9 for my 64-bit W7 laptop but Windows 7 will not let me install the 32-bit version on my 64-bit system. It gives the message "This version of setup does not support your Windows system type" when I try to install it and will not allow the install to proceed. Is there any way around this in order to make W7 64-bit allow the installation of IE9 32-bit?

Reply 7 : Make sure you use IE9 32bit and NOT 64bit

The 64-bit file that you download means that it is for Windows 7 64-bit. It includes both 32-bit and 64-bit editions of IE9.

After you install the package, on your Start Menu there will be at least the items:

Internet Explorer

Internet Explorer (64-bit)

The non-labeled one will be 32-bit.

Thanks, I'll try that. Since both versions of IE9 will be installed, will the 32-bit version of IE9 be the default IE browser or will the 64-bit version be the default since my OS is 64-bit?

Reply 9 : Make sure you use IE9 32bit and NOT 64bit

32 bit - according to the Ars Technica review I read this morning, it is apparently not possible to set the 64 bit version as your default browser.

(disclaimer: haven't tried it out myself yet, as my work machine is Windows XP)

LN46C650L TV - Picture has faded to nothing

Bought my LN46C650L LCD TV in December. March 10th the color started to fade and band as if it switched from really high resolution to really low resolution. Then yesterday the entire screen faded to nothing but a dirty shade of ghost gray. Sound is good, but have no picture at all now. Tried every combination I could in the menu and then some on Picture Settings with no luck. It just kept getting worse. Can't even read the menu now.
Talked to online support - no help at all.
Filled out the in-home repair request and was told I would receive a call within 48 hours...it's been 6 days.
Anyone have an idea of what could be causing the picture issue?

Notice that some 10 drivers are required in a very specific order. What I find today is such drivers are rare to non-existent.

I will take your word that these are not to be found.

BSOD

What is needed to diagnose a BSOD? I experience this often, usually when watching a video or playing a game. Help is appreciated.

Reply 1 : BSOD

For decades I've used all sorts of information to look at these issues. From make, model, age, stories, diagnostics and fast forward to today, scanning for malware and even... swapping in a clean HDD to quick install the OS so to avoid the old damaged OS issue.

Good question. It seems there is no document on how to do this after all these years.
Bob

Reply 2 : BSOD

An issue has come up with the most recent version of Flash as it relates to watches YouTube or playing games that involve the Flash Player.. Try the steps below to see if it helps:

It seems the problem comes from hardware acceleration that Flash v10 uses (V9 doesn't exhibit this issue.)

So first, check if you can see the Flash animation (banner) without the system crashing at:
http://www.adobe.com/software/flash/about/

Don't worry, it's not a video, it shouldn't crash -- if it does, this won't fix your issue. If it works without crashing, right-click on the Flash animation (banner) and uncheck "Enable hardware acceleration" from the Settings panel. You should now be able to view the Flash videos without crashing the computer.

Hope this helps.

Grif

Reply 3 : BSOD

if flash is dying, it's likely a symptom of something being misconfigured on the PC. flash under win7 is pretty stable with a properly configured PC. something else is probably amiss.

Reply 4 : BSOD

But since most are incapable of finding a video driver that works, changing this setting which puts it back to how Flash has worked for years is a very good fix.

There is no sure fire way to diagnose BSOD. To start, make sure your PC is configured to save crash dump files. You will need to download Microsoft Debugging Tools to read these crash dump files. Those files should point you in the right direction

Can't access some internet sites

Hi,

I re-installed Vista 32-bit three days ago and have installed AVG Internet Security. The problem with AVG is that I now can't access some sites that I could access before the reformatting. I've tried both AVG IS 9 and 2011, nothing works. I've checked my router and that's not the cause of my problems. I've started the computer with the failsafe mode and internet access which worked perfectly. I could access everything I wanted but the problem resurfaced when I started Vista normally again.

I've done everything I can think of, every option there is and nothing seems to work! Does anyone have an idea of why AVG Internet Security 2011 isn't letting me access those sites. :?: What am I missing?

Thanks in advance.

Hello Manish,

I checked provided links and there was no problem to access them with AVG 2011.

Are you sure that there cannot be any other filtering applications in conflict with AVG? (network filter drivers)
Or blocked communication with used firewall?

Thank you
