Mac OS X - Crashing before desktop on reboot

Hello-

I am having a problem with my MacBook Pro. Here are the specs:

Hardware Overview:

Model Name: MacBook Pro
Model Identifier: MacBookPro3,1
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
Processor Speed: 2.2 GHz
Number Of Processors: 1
Total Number Of Cores: 2
L2 Cache (per processor): 4 MB
Memory: 2 GB
Bus Speed: 800 MHz
Boot ROM Version: MBP31.0070.B07
SMC Version: 1.16f11
Sudden Motion Sensor:
State: Enabled

System Software Overview:

System Version: Mac OS X 10.4.11 (8S2167)
Kernel Version: Darwin 8.11.1
Boot Volume: Macintosh HD

Basically, the computer recently started to run slowly. Then, after running slowly for awhile, I had shut it down and could not get it to boot back up. When I would boot the computer, it would go to this weird striped background with a warning in several different languages asking me to press the power button or hold it down and reboot the computer. This screen would load up after going through the initial Apple logo (which takes forever) screen. At this point, I can no longer do anything but hold the power button for 10 seconds and restart. In order to get back to the desktop, I have to load up diagnostic tests with my OS X Install Disc 1 by pressing "D" as the computer is booting. It seems that after either running a standard length or extended test, the computer will allow me to get back to the desktop, where I am greeted by the following error:

**************************************************

My software is up to date, other than not being on a higher version of OS X. I have also tried to repair permissions and repair the boot disk from the disk utility when running from OS X Install Disc 1, but that made no difference either.

Any ideas?
