Win 7 and XP File Sharing Problem

I am having trouble with sharing any directory on my Windows 7 RC computer with my two XP computers. Win 7 can see directories and files on the XP computers but the XP machines get a "Access is denied." error message on the Windows 7 directory.

I don't have any software firewalls on any of the machines, but I am able to share the printer connected with the Windows 7 machine with the two XP machines. This version of Windows 7 was an upgrade from Vista Basic in which I was able to share directories with the XP computers.

Thanks for any help in advance.

I am not sure how BigRay solved his issue, but here are some resources for creating a network with computers running different versions of Windows: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Networking-home-computers-running-different-versions-of-Windows.

I know all this and have read this document 4 or 5 times and done everything it suggested. and I Still have the problem. I cannot connect to the shared c drive on my windows 7 pc from all my xp pcs. before windows 7 installation i had no problem. the win 7 c drive is shared and everyone has access and i have a user on win 7 it has full permissions. no passwords it is wide open and nothing! i have been through all this like 10 times. any other ideas!?

Have you checked to make your drivers are up to date: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/compatibility/windows-7/en-us/default.aspx?

Drivers for what? I can see the c drive but when i click on it it denies me access. i should mention i can access the dvd drive ,the cd drive, and the printer. so the xp computers are getting to the windows 7 computer. I just get access denied and "maybe you do not have permissions" when i click on the c drive in the windows 7 pc from my xp pcs. what drivers should i update? by the way when i do windows 7 compatablity check i get everything is compatable.

I persoannly have had no problems with any of the Win7 machines or XP, except one person had a Belkin router , that worked fine except all LAN sharing was blocked. I could ping but the units could not even see each other on the network.

Try no router, PC to PC with a crossover cable if possible or try a different router.

i can access the printer on the win 7 pc and the dvd and cd drive just not the c drive. how would the router just block the c drive?

The lan I was working on had a network printer (hard cable cat5e) as well as 2 Win7 PCs and One XP laptop. No PCs could see each other , but all could get to the Printer on the network.

So the router was interfering with sharing but not to the printer.

It was a Belkin N1 Model. I replaced it with a Netgear Wireless G 37.95 from Walmart and all the problems disappeared.

Hi mate i've got exactly the same problem its the most ennoying thing! I've read heaps of forums and tryed everything and nothing. My xp computer is recognizing my win7 computer and even 1 directory on it but i can't access anything else. i get the same access denied or no permission message coming up. any help with this would be unreal. I'm thinking about trying a reinstall to see if that fixes the problem but i would love to not have to do that.

cheers

I ask again ...How could it be the router when i can se and share the whole windows 7 pc EXCEPT the c drive? I am still trying everything and if i have any headway i will let you know. one thing did work on one of my xp laptops. i set up a user on win 7 and i logged in as thet user on my laptop and had full access. but this did not work on anyother pc(i have 5) and it does not work all the time.

You mentioned you had already set up your network, can you give more information about how you went about setting that up?

I have a wireless router. i have 4 xp pcs and 1 windows 7 pc. everything is shared on all pcs. i have a user on the win 7 pc just for sharing it requiers a passwrd. the ysers n the xp pcs are all the same(it is the user on the win 7 that is specific for sharing).
when i try to go from xp pc to win 7pc for printer, dvd drive,cd drive, everything works fine. when i try to access the c drive i get access denied dut to "you may not have permissions" i have permissions setr up on the win 7 pc to allow everyone, the shared user and administrators. ( the user on the xp pcs are all administrators).
Have i missed anything?

ok you right click on your c drive and go right into security(not sharing). you must add a "guest" account and give them all access.
it goes throughsome file stuff which takes a while but it works.

Do this for your "Public" folder. Great job. That was the fix! You win.

I have 2 windows 7 machines with shared folders and (on one machine) a printer. These are all happily visible between the 2 windows 7 machines. Both Windows 7 machines can see my XP machines. My XP machines can see the Windows 7 machines but not access any of the shared folders or the print on the Windows 7 machines. I have been progressively removing all degrees of protection, security and safety but still the visibility is asymmetric: Windows 7 machines can access anything shared on an XP machine, but the XP machine cannot see any of the shared folders or the print on the Windows server machine.

Tara, I know how he solved this problem and if you email me at jimmy@wedomotherboards.com I'll give you the answer and I'll explain to you why I don't answer the questions people post on this forum.

I know most of the answers to questions and those I don't know I can figure out.

Can someone help? I can read shared files from 7 to XP, but can't access the shared files from XP to 7 - get "access denied....." box. I have tried everything from every post and nothing seems to help. I see the XP machine, but can't access it. I also need share the printer connected to the XP machine. I have shared the printer, but can't see it.

Thanks for the quick reply, but on my XP machine, when I right click on my C drive, I only have "sharing & security" not just 'sharing'......

Reply 21 : Win 7 and XP File Sharing Problem

i thought you had the other problem. seeing win 7 c drive from an xp pc. usualy you have no problem seeing xp from win 7 pc. sorry.

Are all your computers on the same workgroup?
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Networking-home-computers-running-different-versions-of-Windows.

Tara

Reply 23 : Win 7 and XP File Sharing Problem

Why Would Microsoft make these two groups almost the same name?
to confuse the general populas?

Reply 24 : Win 7 and XP File Sharing Problem

Jimmy,

I don't take part in any naming conversations so I couldn't tell you! But they do have distinct capabilities as posted earlier.

Tara

Reply 25 : Win 7 and XP File Sharing Problem

Yes, both computers have the same workgroup name. One post said to not use homegroup. I can "see" the XP machine from Win 7 machine - just can't access it.

Thanks EVERYONE for ANY/ALL suggestions.

Have you tried to Share any files from your Windows 7 computer? Follow the instructions here: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Share-files-with-someone.

Tara

Reply 27 : Win 7 and XP File Sharing Problem

Tara - I can see my "7 files" from the XP machine - can't see the "XP files" from the 7 machine - get 'access denied' error message. Thanks!

had the same sharing problems and frustrations...solved it by setting up users on both PCs with the same name and same password...know it sounds dumb, but it worked for me...thrn, if the active user on each machine is the same, you can see each computer's shares from the other...if different users are the active user on each, both Win7 and/or xp will prompt for a signon...if you sign on with the common name/pwd, the shares become visible...
