Winzip self extractor can not be totally removed,

Hello, I have a Gateway NV78 laptop running Windows 7 Home Premium. I have a problem that is going to be greater soon, as I am expecting to be doing much more work with zip files. I have attempted to remove Winzip and replace it with 7zip. I used Revo to remove Winzip, and there are still remaining files, of some sort, in just the wrong places (initial user interface, in seemingly a default position). I reloaded Winzip and Revoed again. Same remaining files. Windows Explorer /search can also not find these remaining files. Years ago (MS ME) Winzip was actually tied the OS (why?) but according KB articles that was corrected. I would certainly prefer not going into the registry, but there are actually several screens of files still somewhere that I want to lose, or at least hide. Any ideas on how to accomplish this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks as always.

Every once in a while you encounter an owner that must find and delete every little item that some app installed. They don't care that the replacement works or not.

Tell more.

Bob,

Sorry if a short post got your way. Hit wrong key. In the coming months I am needing to upgrade my zip software and some hardware. While Winzip works as a extractor, I cannot support an operation that hides files where they cannot be removed, or even hidden. Currently even with 7zip open, when opening a zip file, Winzip opens in a default postion and can not be hiddne, removed, or ignored.

That helped. I read your post again but can't see where you tackle file associations.

I'm left to GUESS what you mean by "an operation that hides files". Again there are some that rail against things and fight some battle. Here I can discuss associations and more.

Besides, since I can boot up some other CD and see all hidden files PLUS we have fine alternatives to Explorer, why would I think anything is hidden?

Bob,
I knew there was a method (file associations) to deal with this that I was forgetting. Sometimes it is all just too much for my aging brain. It had been a while.

After I did the NT entry, I hurried to complete my follow up and surely did not explain my position accurately. By hidden I meant that I did not care if that were still in the registry. I am totally aware that if someone knows where to look and has the time, all can be found. The rail, as you call it, was as much against myself as Winzip. While everyday with computers is an amazement, we all want it to be simple. It is often tricks, and then the trigger to remember the tricks. Today you were my trigger and for that I am very appreciative. Thanks.

Let's hope you cure it soon. If not, we can try again.

Hi Dan, I use Revo all the time ,and only had a problem when I did not read the instructions fully as it went through the removal steps, and hit "finish", before I had selected all the listed files and hit delete on each list.Perhaps you did the same and that might have left some of the files behind?
Hope that helps,cheers, Frank(Bukti)

Frank, Thanks for your thoughts. I have have been using Revo longer, mostly with much success, than I can remember, but have missed stuff being in a hurry before. Never good. Please note in my initial entry where I stated "reloaded Winzip and Revoed again". That effort was just to double check for such errors. I actually contacted Revo support regarding Revo Pro and this situation, and their reply basically stated that Pro gets more, but not all, and at times, the only solution is to go into registry. That is above my pay grade. I followed Bob's advice and I believe it accomplished what I wanted to do. More testing this morning. Revo is good not perfect. Yesterday I got sidetracked in my remaining time by opening my hard drive and then 'program files x86' (highly recommended) then comparing the list there with Revo's list. Revo had missed some stuff. More of that this morning also. Thanks again for your efforts.
Dan
